Jose I. Concepcion graduated from the University of Miami Honors Program in 1996. He received his Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University in 1999, where he served as a Goodwin Fellows Scholar and as a research assistant for the Dean of the law school.

Admitted to the Florida Bar in 1999, he soon entered the criminal justice system. Beginning in 2000, he served for three years as an Assistant Public Defender for the Tenth Judicial Circuit, Highlands County , and, later, as an Assistant State Attorney within that circuit for two years.

He has both prosecuted and defended hundreds of drunk driving cases. Many of those cases went to trial where he focused on scientific attacks on the techniques employed by law enforcement. Additionally, he supervised divisions in county and circuit court, including the Public Defender DUI division, and assisted in the training of both county and circuit prosecutors and public defenders.

One of the highest producing trial attorneys, he took nearly 100 cases to trial within those five years, handling all levels of complex misdemeanor, felony and DUI cases.

Mr. Conception has published articles on criminal practice in the Florida Bar Journal and The Florida Defender. He has also served as an instructor for South Florida Community College , as well as a prosecutor providing training on law and constitutional search and seizure issues. He entered private practice in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, Hillsborough County in 2005, where he defended numerous complex cases including misdemeanors, felonies, and drunk driving cases.

In 2006, Mr. Concepcion joined Essen , Essen , Susaneck & Cohen P.A. where he is primarily responsible for the defense of DUI cases primarily in Broward County .
